What is a GST Calculator?

A GST (Goods and Services Tax) calculator is a tool that helps you calculate the GST amount on a product or service. It computes CGST (Central GST), SGST (State GST), and IGST (Integrated GST) based on the transaction type and GST rate. GST was introduced in India on July 1, 2017, replacing multiple indirect taxes and creating a unified tax system across the country.

Our GST calculator helps businesses, consumers, and professionals quickly determine the GST amount, total price including tax, and breakdown of CGST/SGST or IGST. It's essential for invoicing, pricing decisions, and understanding the tax component in transactions.

How to Calculate GST?

GST calculation depends on whether the transaction is intra-state or inter-state:

  • Intra-state (Same State): CGST + SGST (each half of GST rate)
  • Inter-state (Different States): IGST (full GST rate)
GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate) / 100
Total Amount = Base Amount + GST Amount

For example, on ₹1,000 with 18% GST: GST = ₹180, Total = ₹1,180. If intra-state: CGST = ₹90, SGST = ₹90. If inter-state: IGST = ₹180.

GST Rates in India

India has four main GST rate slabs:

  • 5%: Essential items like food grains, medicines, transport services
  • 12%: Processed foods, computers, mobile phones, restaurant services
  • 18%: Most goods and services including soaps, toothpaste, financial services
  • 28%: Luxury items like cars, ACs, cigarettes, aerated drinks

Some items like fresh vegetables, unprocessed food, and certain services are exempt from GST (0%).

CGST, SGST, and IGST Explained

CGST (Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state transactions. Goes to the central government's revenue.

SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state transactions. Goes to the state government's revenue.

IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central Government on inter-state transactions. Shared between central and destination state governments.

Example: On ₹1,000 with 18% GST intra-state: CGST = ₹90, SGST = ₹90. Same transaction inter-state: IGST = ₹180.

GST Calculator Formula

The GST calculation formula is straightforward:

GST Amount = (Base Price × GST Rate) / 100
Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

For reverse calculation (when total price is known):

Base Price = Total Price / (1 + GST Rate/100)
GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price
